HOW DOES THE
RUMINATI APPLICATION
WORK?
What is an emissions baseline?
The Ruminati emissions baseline is an account of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions released on your property (i.e. livestock emissions, diesel and fertiliser) minus the carbon sequestration from trees you have planted and soils you are managing.
The Ruminati platform is designed so that you can baseline your farm business emissions in a simple process grounded by science. All the information you need is in records that most farmers keep on hand.
The baseline gives you your GHG emissions sectioned out into Scope 1 (Farm related), Scope 2 (Indirect energy) and Scope 3 (Pre-farm) emissions as a starting point which can then be updated for each financial year to track your progress in-line with industry and government commitments.
What do I need to prepare?
Having a few things prepared in advanced will make it much quicker to do your baseline.
LIVESTOCK RECORDS
The annual average DSE or AE for sheep and/or cattle on farm. Alternatively, you can use the livestock numbers for different classes of livestock on your farm and the Ruminati Calculator can estimate these for you.
PURCHASED STOCK & FEED
Records of livestock you have bought off-farm, their liveweight and location purchased from. You will also need the amount of supplementary feed you may have purchased.
PASTURE IMPROVEMENT
Records including purchased fertiliser, chemical or spray records and animal health application records.
ACCOUNTING RECORDS
Records of expenses including electricity bills, fuel use and harvest records (including yield of each crop type grown on farm).
