Will Onus presents on the latest technology for emissions reporting for grain producers at the Australian Summer Grains Conference 2025.

Carbon insetting, input costs and why grain growers are asking the right questions

Written by Ruminati Team on July 9, 2025

Grain growers have a reputation for being across the numbers, and the Australian Summer Grains Conference on the Gold Coast last week did nothing to change that impression. With this year's theme centred on turning challenges into sustainable farm profitability, the Carbon and Economics Stream (sponsored by Rabobank Australia) drew producers, advisors and innovators who were there to have a genuine conversation, not just listen to presentations.

Our COO Will Onus spoke in the stream on carbon insetting for grains and what a practical approach to sustainable profitability actually looks like on the ground. The discussion that followed covered familiar territory for anyone working in this space, but with the grain sector's particular lens on inputs, scale and margin, it had its own character.

Two contributions from the floor stood out: Rebecca Hurst from GrainGrowers made the point that data standardisation is a prerequisite for real progress, a view Ruminati shares, and one that applies just as much to emissions tracking as it does to any other

part of the supply chain. Andrew Whitelaw from Episode 3 brought the commercial reality into focus: rising input costs mean producers need tools that actually help them manage efficiency, not add to the load.

That tension - between the growing demands placed on producers and the practical usefulness of the tools available to them - is one the industry is going to keep working through. The grain sector's willingness to engage with it seriously, rather than waiting to be told what to do, is encouraging.

Thanks to the conference organisers, speakers and growers for keeping the conversation real. And to Alex Greetham and Adam Little from Elders for the company (Adam did a fantastic job MC'ing Will's session!)
