Will Onus, Peter Leihn and Bobby Miller show off the Ruminati platform at the National Farmers Federation Conference in 2023.

Data security, producer trust and why it matters who controls your emissions data

Written by Ruminati Team on October 26, 2023

The National Farmers Federation National Conference in Canberra brought the Ruminati team together with producers, industry groups and policymakers for a day of conversation about where agriculture is heading and where the pressure points are.

Will Onus and Bobby Miller were there as producers themselves, talking through how they use Ruminati on their own farm enterprises- which tends to make for a different kind of conversation than a product pitch. Lily Rodgers ran platform walkthroughs for producers wanting to see how emissions tracking actually works in practice, and CEO Peter Leihn fielded questions on the topic that comes up more often than almost any other in these settings: data security.

It's a fair concern, and an important one. When a producer builds an emissions profile, they're capturing detailed information about their operation: livestock numbers, inputs, production volumes, management practices. That's commercially sensitive data, and the question of who can see it, how it's stored and what happens if they want to stop sharing it is one that deserves a straight answer.

Ruminati's position on this has been consistent since the platform was built: producers own their data, full stop. They control who it's shared with, at what level of detail, and for how long. Permissions can be granted and revoked. Nothing moves up the supply chain without informed consent. The platform is designed so that the data flows to the places the producer chooses (banks, processors, retailers, industry bodies) and nowhere else.

As emissions reporting requirements tighten and more of the supply chain starts asking for farm-level data, that architecture matters. The producers who engage with this space early, on their own terms, with a clear understanding of how their data is being used, are the ones best placed as it becomes more routine.
