Grain, heat and a lot of enthusiasm: Ruminati at the GRDC GroundUp Showcase Day
Written by Ruminati Team on August 29, 2024
Toowoomba in August can be warm. This year's GRDC GroundUp Showcase Day at AgTech and Logistics was warm in more ways than one.
Lily Rodgers spent the day representing Ruminati in conversations with grain producers about emissions tracking and the practical questions that come with it: what needs to be captured, how the platform works for cropping systems, and what value there is in measuring on-farm emissions beyond the compliance angle.
Grain producers are often further along on data capture than they get credit for. Cropping systems run on precision - input rates, yield maps, soil testing - and that existing discipline translates well when it comes to emissions reporting. Fertiliser use, in particular, is one of the larger emission sources in cropping systems, and producers who are already tracking application rates and inputs have a head start on building a credible baseline.
The hands-on demos were a useful way to work through that with producers directly. Seeing how the platform handles a cropping enterprise (inputs, fertiliser rates, fuel, production metrics) tends to make the process feel more manageable than it does in the abstract. And the questions that come out of a live demo are usually more useful than the ones that come out of a presentation.
The broader point is one that came up in conversations throughout the day: taking action on emissions management only generates value if the outcomes are being measured. Improving management practices, reducing inputs, shifting to more efficient systems- none of that tells the story it needs to tell without data behind it.
Thanks to GRDC for a well-run day and for bringing together a group of producers who are clearly thinking seriously about the future of their businesses.
