Ruminati CEO Bobby Miller speaks to the crowd about farm emissions at the Henty Machinery Field Days from the Rabobank truck.

Henty Field Days, a Rabobank truck and some very direct conversations about emissions

Written by Ruminati Team on September 20, 2024

There's something about field days that cuts through the noise. The producers who stop and listen (and then stay to ask questions) are usually the ones already thinking seriously about the topic, and Henty tends to attract that kind of crowd.

Bobby Miller was back at the Henty Machinery Field Days this week for a second year, presenting from the Rabobank truck on Monday and Tuesday on why emissions tracking is worth a producer's time and attention. The sessions drew a good crowd despite the heat (which was, by all accounts, significant!)

The conversations after the sessions were where the real value was. Farmers wanted to get into the specifics: how emissions intensity is calculated, what drives it up or down in different systems, and what modelling reductions actually looks like in practice. These aren't abstract questions for producers who are already managing inputs closely and want to understand how that work shows up in the numbers.

Emissions intensity - kilograms of CO₂ equivalent per kilogram of product - is increasingly the metric that supply chains and financial institutions are paying attention to. Producers running efficient, well-managed systems often have better numbers than they expect, and understanding that baseline is the first step toward being able to communicate it. In a market where buyers are starting to ask questions about sustainability credentials, knowing your number matters.

Thanks to Megan Galloway and the Rabobank team for hosting two good days in good company. Henty is the kind of event that reminds you there's a lot of thoughtful, practical work happening at farm level, even when the broader industry conversation feels noisy.
