Ruminati's Will Onus, Lily Rodgers and Bobby Miller attend the Paraway Pastoral Field Day in 2023.

Producers are ready. The harder question is where to begin.

Written by Ruminati Team on August 30, 2023

There's a version of the agricultural emissions conversation that assumes producers are reluctant participants- dragged toward sustainability reporting by supply chain pressure or regulation. A day at Paraway Pastoral's Getting Started Towards Net Zero field day at Burindi Station a few weeks ago was a useful corrective to that assumption.

The event brought together a strong lineup of speakers: Harvey Gaynor from Paraway Pastoral, Warwick Badgery from the Department of Primary Industries, Ben Wark from Downforce Technologies, Margaret Jewell from MLA, and Lachie Hart from Stockyard Beef. The conversation ranged across emissions reduction strategies, soil carbon, natural capital and what meaningful progress actually looks like on a working farm.

What came through most clearly across the day was that producers are genuinely curious and motivated. The questions being asked weren't about whether to engage with emissions management, but how: which methodology, which tools, which starting point makes sense for their system. The appetite is real. The gap is practical, accessible guidance on where to begin.

That's a gap Ruminati is built to fill. The first step in any emissions journey is understanding your baseline: what you're producing, what inputs you're using, and what the emissions number looks like for your business right now. Without that starting point, everything else is guesswork. You can't manage what you don't measure, and you can't demonstrate progress you haven't tracked.

For producers at a field day like this one - already motivated, already asking good questions - the platform gives them somewhere concrete to go with that energy. Getting a baseline in place is the work, and it's more achievable than most producers expect when they sit down and start.
